Sharps disposal services are available for people with diabetes at selected pharmacies and other authorised collection points in NSW.
Each public hospital in NSW is required to provide a free disposal service for community sharps. Please contact your local hospital for information about the service.

For more information, download our sharps disposal brochure, also available in Arabic, Chinese, Greek, Italian, Vietnamese or pictorial format. |
Securing Sharps
Your sharps must be secured in a strong puncture resistant container, such as an Australian Standard Sharps container (available from Diabetes Australia, pharmacies and some councils) or a screw top strong plastic container or bottle. Check with your hospital or council to see which type and size of container they will accept. Sharps must NOT be placed in any recycling bins.

Other Disposal Points
Some Diabetes Australia-NSW Centres also have sharps disposal facilities. Health Professionals can order community sharps disposal brochures for your facility.
If your council is not listed, public hospitals across NSW accept used sharps in appropriate disposal containers at their medical waste disposal point. 'Community sharps' include finger prickers or blood glucose lancets, syringes, pen needles and needles used to insert insulin pump tubing.
If you have any problems with sharps disposal in your area or if there are any errors or omissions to this list please email us info@diabetesnsw.com.au or call the Diabetes Australia Customer Care Line on 1300 136 588.
